The plasma-facing walls of magnetic confinement fusion facilities receive intense heat fluxes that can easily exceed their extraction capacities, and ultimately damage them. Protecting the wall in real time is key to the operation of these facilities.

Interactions between the plasma and the walls of tokamak fusion facilities can generate dust from materials exposed to the plasma. This dust can interfere with tokamak operation when it enters the plasma, polluting it to the point of extinction.
